How to Run Homebrew Games on Your PSP with Half Byte Loader 6.20
If you have a PSP with firmware 6.20 or lower, you can use a program called Half Byte Loader (HBL) to run homebrew games and applications on your device. HBL is an open source project that exploits a vulnerability in the Patapon 2 demo to load unsigned code on the PSP. HBL can run emulators, utilities, and fan-made games that are not officially supported by Sony.
In this article, we will show you how to download and use HBL on your PSP with firmware 6.20. You will need a PSP with firmware 6.20 or lower, a USB cable, a computer, and a memory stick with at least 128 MB of free space.
Step 1: Download the required files
You will need to download the following files:
The Patapon 2 demo from here.
The Half Byte Loader 6.20 from here.
The Patapon 2 save data exploit from here.
Some homebrew games or applications that you want to run. You can find some examples here.
Step 2: Copy the files to your PSP
Connect your PSP to your computer using the USB cable and enable USB mode on your PSP. Then, follow these steps:
Extract the Patapon 2 demo file and copy the folder named \"UCUS98732\" to the \"PSP/GAME\" folder on your memory stick.
Extract the Half Byte Loader file and copy the folder named \"hbl\" and the file named \"h.bin\" to the root of your memory stick.
Extract the Patapon 2 save data exploit file and copy the folder named \"UCUS98732_DATA02\" to the \"PSP/SAVEDATA\" folder on your memory stick.
Copy any homebrew games or applications that you want to run to the \"PSP/GAME\" folder on your memory stick.
Step 3: Run HBL on your PSP
Disconnect your PSP from your computer and exit USB mode on your PSP. Then, follow these steps:
Go to the game menu on your PSP and select \"Memory Stick\". You should see the Patapon 2 demo icon.
Start the Patapon 2 demo and press \"Continue\" when prompted.
Select \"Load Game\" and choose the first slot. You should see a corrupted save data icon.
Press \"X\" to load the save data. You should see a black screen with some text.
Press \"X\" again to launch HBL. You should see a menu with a list of homebrew games and applications that you copied to your memory stick.
Select any homebrew game or application that you want to run and press \"X\". Enjoy!
Troubleshooting
If you encounter any problems while using HBL, here are some tips:
Make sure you have enough free space on your memory stick for HBL and your homebrews.
Make sure you have copied the files correctly to your memory stick.
Make sure you have downloaded the correct version of HBL for your firmware.
Make sure you have downloaded compatible homebrews for HBL. Some homebrews may not work or may crash on HBL.
If HBL fails to load or freezes, try restarting your PSP and repeating the steps. aa16f39245
