Ciaphas Cain: Duty Calls - A Review of the Fifth Novel in the Popular Series by Sandy Mitchell
Ciaphas Cain: Duty Calls is the fifth novel in the Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchell, published by Black Library in 2007. It is part of the \"Shadowlight Trilogy\" within the Cain series, along with Death or Glory and Cain's Last Stand. The novel follows the exploits of Commissar Ciaphas Cain, a reluctant hero of the Imperium of Man, as he faces a triple threat of Tyranids, genestealers and Chaos cultists on the planet Periremunda.
The novel begins with Cain and his regiment of Valhallans arriving on Periremunda, where a rebellion against Imperial authority is underway. Cain soon discovers that there is more to the uprising than meets the eye, as he encounters an assassination attempt, a mysterious xenos artifact and his old acquaintance Inquisitor Amberley Vail. Vail reveals that Periremunda is infested with hidden genestealers and a nascent Chaos cult, and that she needs Cain's help to recover the artifact and stop the enemies of the Imperium from unleashing a catastrophe.
The novel is a fast-paced and humorous adventure that showcases Cain's wit, courage and luck in the face of overwhelming odds. Mitchell's writing style is engaging and entertaining, blending action, comedy and horror in a balanced way. The novel also features several references and callbacks to previous events in Cain's life, as well as some hints about his future. The novel is narrated by Cain himself, with occasional annotations and comments by Vail, who provides additional information and insights from her perspective.
Ciaphas Cain: Duty Calls is a highly enjoyable and recommended read for fans of Warhammer 40k, especially those who like a lighter and more humorous take on the grimdark setting. The novel can be read as a standalone story, but it is better appreciated as part of the larger Ciaphas Cain series. The novel is available in paperback, ebook and audiobook formats.
The novel is divided into five parts, each corresponding to a different stage of Cain's mission on Periremunda. In Part One, Cain and his troops are deployed to quell a riot in one of the planet's arcologies, massive structures that house most of the population. There, he encounters a sniper who tries to kill him, but is saved by Jurgen, his loyal aide and bodyguard. He also meets Colonel Kasteen and Major Broklaw, the commanders of the Valhallan 597th, who inform him that Lord General Zyvan has ordered them to assist the local forces in restoring order. Cain is not happy about this, as he prefers to avoid urban combat and civilian casualties.
In Part Two, Cain is summoned to meet Zyvan at his headquarters, where he is surprised to find Inquisitor Amberley Vail waiting for him. Vail tells him that she has been investigating a mysterious xenos artifact that was discovered on Periremunda, and that she believes it is connected to the Shadowlight, a device that Cain encountered on Gravalax several years ago. She also reveals that Periremunda is infested with genestealers, a type of Tyranid that can infiltrate and corrupt human populations. She suspects that the genestealers are behind the rebellion, and that they are preparing for the arrival of a Tyranid hive fleet. She asks Cain to help her recover the artifact and stop the genestealers before they can unleash their plan.
In Part Three, Cain and Vail embark on a covert operation to infiltrate the arcology where the artifact is located. They are accompanied by Jurgen, Felicia Tayber, a tech-priestess who can interface with the artifact, and Jenit Sulla, a former Valhallan officer who now works for Vail. They manage to reach the artifact's chamber, but are ambushed by a group of genestealers and their cultists. They manage to fight their way out, but not before Tayber activates the artifact and triggers a massive explosion that destroys most of the arcology.
In Part Four, Cain and his companions escape from the arcology and regroup with Zyvan and Kasteen. They learn that the explosion has caused widespread panic and chaos on Periremunda, and that the genestealers have launched a full-scale uprising. Zyvan orders Cain and his regiment to hold a vital bridge against the enemy forces until reinforcements arrive. Cain reluctantly agrees, but secretly hopes to find a way out of the situation. He also learns that Vail has gone missing after the explosion, and fears that she might be dead.
In Part Five, Cain and his troops defend the bridge against waves of genestealers and cultists. They are joined by Vail, who has survived the explosion and has discovered that the genestealers have a hidden base under the bridge. She tells Cain that they have to destroy it before they can escape. Cain agrees, but only because he sees no other option. He leads a small team into the base, where they encounter a powerful genestealer patriarch and his brood. They manage to plant explosives and detonate them, collapsing the base and killing most of the genestealers. They then make their way back to Zyvan's headquarters, where they are hailed as heroes.
The novel ends with an epilogue, where Vail explains that the artifact was part of an ancient xenos weapon that could manipulate reality. She also reveals that she has recovered another piece of it from Simia Orichalcae, where Cain had left it behind after escaping from there. She tells Cain that she needs his help to find the rest of the weapon and stop anyone from using it for evil purposes. Cain reluctantly agrees, knowing that he has no choice but to follow her wherever she goes. aa16f39245
