How to Program Your Motorola Radius GM300 Radio with Radio Doctor Software
If you have a Motorola Radius GM300 radio and you want to program it with your computer, you might be interested in using Radio Doctor software. Radio Doctor is a Windows-based program that allows you to read and write codeplugs, change frequencies, power levels, channel spacing, and other settings on your GM300 radio. Radio Doctor is not an official Motorola product, but it was developed by a third-party programmer who reverse-engineered the radio protocol. However, Motorola reportedly threatened to sue the developer, so the software is no longer available for download from the original source. Fortunately, some copies of the software have been shared online by radio enthusiasts, such as in the files section of the RadioDoctor@Radios.groups.io group.
In this article, we will show you how to use Radio Doctor software to program your GM300 radio. You will need the following items:
A Motorola Radius GM300 radio
A Windows XP computer (Radio Doctor may not work well on newer versions of Windows)
A serial cable that connects your computer to your radio (either a RIB-less cable or a RIB box with a radio-specific cable)
Radio Doctor software (version 1.1.12 or later)
Here are the steps to follow:
Download and install Radio Doctor software on your computer. You can find it in the files section of the RadioDoctor@Radios.groups.io group or search online for other sources. The file name is motorola_gm300_xp_software_mr.zip.
Connect your serial cable to your computer and your radio. Make sure you use the correct pins on the radio's microphone socket (pins 4 and 7 for RIB-less cable or pins 2 and 3 for RIB box). Turn on your radio and set it to channel 1.
Run Radio Doctor software and select the correct COM port that matches your serial cable. You can check this in the Device Manager screen under Ports.
Click on Read Codeplug to download the current settings from your radio to your computer. You should see a progress bar and a data light blinking on your radio. If you get a NO CONNECTION error, check your cable connections and COM port settings.
Once the codeplug is read, you can view and edit various parameters on your radio, such as frequencies, power levels, channel spacing, PL tones, etc. You can also save the codeplug as a file on your computer for backup or cloning purposes.
When you are done editing, click on Write Codeplug to upload the new settings from your computer to your radio. You should see a progress bar and a data light blinking on your radio. If you get a NO CONNECTION error, check your cable connections and COM port settings.
Turn off your radio and disconnect the serial cable. Your GM300 radio is now programmed with Radio Doctor software.
