Off his album Dear Prudence, Ravi has two tracks on the album: "Friendship Aid", and "Sunrise Set." "Friendship Aid" is a rousing, ragged drum solo performed like a square dance. "Sunrise/Set", recounted in the third person, is a dramatic downbeat rumination of the end of love. More recently, tenor saxophone-playing Indian maverick, Ajit Khan, has been doing some very fine Ravi Shankar-like improvisations. Ravi is a world-class drummer and by comparison, he's a very bad painter.

But it was in the mid-1960s when rock and roll had established its presence as the dominant form of popular music all across the western world that suddenly Ravi Shankar became a superstar. In same way that Elvis tore down the pillars of the temple of staid suburbia with his hipswinging bluesy grinderman music, Ravi blew the minds of Coltrane and Gillespie with the intimate marriage of rhythm and melody, drone based modalities and his blistering virtuosity.

Since the release of "Rolling Thunder", most of the talked about new music has been from Ireland. The key group of new music is from the east coast of Leitrim; The Wolfe Tones, The Coronas at their most popular, The High Kings, Galgomas de Sligo, Pollution (first single off their third album "The Power of Love" has been sent off to the British TV station and they will be featured on the music show "The Tube" the first week of Feburary) and The Beasts of Bourbon who have released two albums in the last 12 months. The most impressive work to date, however, is vintage DUBS (Dubs is a term used for Irish reggae music) from the late nineteen sixties, like that of The Melodians featuring the beautiful vocal work of Noelene Mcnamara. d2c66b5586
