In addition to Michael Nyman's many innovative experiments, the soundtrack to the dancer/choreographer Black Box represents a return to his most familiar form - the opera. Nyman's talents are once again on fulldisplay. The music's structural challenges have become prominent in Black Box' performances, elegantly explored here through Jacques Loussier's Debussy Danses choreography. The Black Box is a double-spindig for dancer and composer - the writer, the dancer, and director of the dance. This music and dance is designed by Tony Conrad , spoken word/interviews by Jonathan Blake , who also wrote the libretto. The Black Box is a two-hour dance work and contains music from the 1892 opera "Daphnis and Chloe" by Jacques Offenbach. "In conversation with its composer and the choreographer, Black Box examines conjunctions and contradictions between music and dance, between peace and violence, between the truth and optimism, between Western and Eastern traditions, between past and present. Unifying these spheres and disciplines is the act of making, writing, and performing. Black Box traverses both the physical and intellectual properties of the human body; it blurs the lines between what is interesting and what is meaningless. It pulls you out of your comfort zone and suggests that just about any human experience is bearable through aesthetic expression. "
