Based on the British game show format, The $100,000 Pyramid was first seen in the United States on NBC in 1978, when it aired opposite Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. It had its biggest success during its first season, when the show was hosted by Pat Sajak, one of the creators of the show.
The game was also created by a two-time Emmy-winning Hollywood producer, Leonard Goldberg, one of the founders of the game show and production company, Mark Goodson Productions. Goldberg, who died in 2007, developed the idea for a trivia game for *Jeopardy! and *Wheel of Fortune* when he was president of Mark Goodson and Company.
NBC had originally scheduled the fall premiere of The Voice to air on September 21, but has moved it back to October 4, as originally announced, to accommodate the return of Game of Thrones. The Voice was NBC's highest-rated show in the 2010-11 season. It is also up against the return of The Biggest Loser on the Fox Broadcasting Company.
The comedy is produced by Judd Apatow and Paul Scheer, who are also writers and stars of the hit Funny or Die web series The League, which was adapted into the FOX series The League in 2011.
The show was a ratings smash for NBC, with the single two-hour episode on March 3, 2009, averaging 18.7 million viewers, and in its second season, it averaged more than 22 million viewers per episode, becoming the highest-rated series on cable in its Sunday time slot and the most-watched summer series in two decades.
