How to Set Up Abaqus 6.9 License File on Windows and Linux
Abaqus 6.9 is a powerful finite element analysis software that requires a valid license file to run. Depending on whether you are using a Purdue owned but self supported machine or an ECN deployed installation of Abaqus, the setup of the license file may differ. In this article, we will show you how to set up Abaqus 6.9 license file on Windows and Linux platforms.
Types of Licenses
Abaqus 6.9 offers two types of licenses: Research and Teaching. Research licenses are intended for academic research purposes only, while Teaching licenses are intended for classroom instruction and student projects. You can choose the type of license you want to use with Abaqus by selecting the appropriate option from the \"Dassault Systemes SIMULIA Abaqus CAE\" menu or by editing the environment file.
Environment File
The environment file is a text file that contains settings and variables that affect the behavior of Abaqus. The default name of the environment file is abaqus_v6.env and it is located in the default working directory (C:\\temp on Windows and your home directory or the directory you are in when you log/ssh in on Linux). You can edit the environment file to change the type of license you want to use or to specify the license server host and port.
Windows
To use teaching licenses, edit the environment file to be:
academic=TEACHINGabaquslm_license_file=\"1736@marina.ecn.purdue.edu\"
To use research licenses, edit the environment file to be:
academic=RESEARCHabaquslm_license_file=\"1736@mooring.ecn.purdue.edu\"
Linux
In your home directory or the directory you are in when you log/ssh in, create a file named abaqus_v6.env and edit it to add the lines:
academic=TEACHINGabaquslm_license_file=\"1736@marina.ecn.purdue.edu\"
or
academic=RESEARCHabaquslm_license_file=\"1736@mooring.ecn.purdue.edu\"
License Server
Abaqus 6.9 uses FLEXnet Licensing to manage the license usage. The license server is a computer that runs the FLEXnet Licensing service and provides licenses to Abaqus clients. The license server host name and port number are specified in the environment file or in the command line when running Abaqus.
Updating an Abaqus FLEXnet License File
You may need to update an Abaqus FLEXnet license file; for example, when you obtain a new license file to replace an expired license file or to revise license features. You may also need to replace a license file from a previous release of Abaqus . You can update a FLEXnet license file by either restarting the license server or forcing the server to reread the license file.
To update a FLEXnet license file and restart the license server:
Backup the current license file by saving it with a new name.
Copy the new license file to the same location as the original license file using the name of the original license file.
Run the FLEXnet Licensing tool lmdown (see lmdown) to shut down the currently running Abaqus license server.
Restart the Abaqus license server. For Windows platforms use the method described in Starting the FLEXnet server using LMTOOLS.
